Pura Penataran Agung Batur, located in Batur Village, Kintamani, is the principal temple of the Pura Ulun Danu Batur complex which, together with the village of Batur, was located in the caldera of the Mt Batur volcano. After Mt Batur erupted in 1926, both the village and the temple were moved to the present site. All that remained of the original temple, an 11-tiered meru dedicated to Dewi Batari Ulun Danu ("Ulun Danu" means "head of the lake"), now stands in the temple's main inner courtyard together with three 9-tiered merus for the gods of Mt Batur, Mt Abang, and Ida Batara Dalem Waturenggong (the deified king of the Gelgel dynasty who ruled from 1460 to 1550) and Ida Ratu Ayu Kentel Gumi (protector of crops from disease). In the temple's northwest corner is a shrine in Chinese style dedicated to Ida Ratu Ayu Subandar, the patron of commerce.
