A sign reads:
"The grave of D. José da Silva Nunes King [Liurai] of Maubara between 1874 and 1954 built by Governor Manuel Ferreira de Carvalho (1940-1945) in honour of the king loyal to Portugal. The covering represents the Portuguese flag unfurled in the wind, under whci, as the story goes, D. José wanted to be buried.
It was recovered soon after independence and the Association Maubara Mos Bele recently built a fence around it."
